Sugar- Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) such as soft drinks, fruit drinks, sports drinks, teas and coffees, energy drinks and sweetened milk consumption is established as a major risk factor for overweight, obesity, type 2 diabetes and also dental caries. SSBs consumption is particularly popular in school children. In the past few decades, the sources of energy intake among youth have shifted towards a higher consumption of SSBs especially in summers. The healthy alternatives which are readily available in the market are water, chaach, coconut water, milk (without added sugar) and freshly squeezed juice.

Cervical cancer can also be cured if detected early and treated according to best practices. It is the fourth most common cancer among women globally and the third commonest in the South-East Asia Region. This advocacy video is developed by the World Health Organization, Regional office for South-East Asia for policymakers, health workers, families and communities. Key messages delivered through this video include three cost-effective measures to help reduce cervical cancer and related deaths. To eliminate cervical cancer by the end of the century, Member States need to achieve the 2030 target of ‘90-70-90’ in its attempt to fight against cervical cancer. (90% of girls fully vaccinated with the HPV vaccine by the age of 15; 70% of women screened using a high-performance test by the age of 35, and again by the age of 45; and 90% of women identified with cervical cancer are treated). It is time for policymakers, healthcare providers, civil society, research organizations, the private sector and communities to eliminate cervical cancer and save lives. In WHO-SEARO Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child & Adolescent Health and Ageing (MCA) in collaboration with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD), Immunization and Vaccine Development (IVD) provide technical support to Member States through WHO country offices.

#ActOnNCDsAndAirPollution is a micro-documentary developed by Healthy India Alliance/India NCD Alliance (HIA) under the NCD Prevention Accelerator Programme 2021-2023. Development of this micro-documentary is supported by the NCD Alliance, as part of the NCD Alliance’s partnership with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. The intent of this micro-documentary is to highlight air pollution as a major risk factor for NCDs, and its linkages with NCDs and current programmatic and policy landscape of air pollution mitigation in India. The micro-documentary also provides recommendations to augment action on air pollution in India.

Strengthening Cessation capacity of Primary care Professionals (SCCoPE) is a step towards strengthening the capacity of primary care providers in tobacco cessation through evidence-based tobacco cessation training model in India. In a short period of time, SCCoPE has trained 537 primary care physicians across 10 intervention districts in two states of India and demonstrated real world effectiveness of changes in cessation practices and improved quit rates amongst patients presenting in public health facilities.

Thailand became the first in WHO South-East Asia Region to get WHO classification for its emergency medical team (EMT). This classification makes Thailand EMT the 26th team in the international roster of WHO classified, internationally deployable medical teams.
